The GTA 6 map: the two places the publisher actually names
Two competing stores publish the same GTA 6 synopsis in all eight languages, and that synopsis names two places: the city of Vice City and the state of Leonida. Everything else circulating about the map comes from somewhere else.
Vice City and the state of Leonida, named in plain text
The English PlayStation Store listing carries three lines after the single-player note: "Vice City, USA. Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them. But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida."
The French listing says the same: "Vice City, Etats-Unis. Jason et Lucia ont toujours su que la vie ne leur ferait pas de cadeau [...] au coeur d'un complot criminel qui s'etend dans tout l'Etat de Leonida."
This text is not one store's invention. The Xbox Store publishes the same paragraph, in all eight languages checked. Two competing retailers showing the same words is the publisher's text, not a shop's copywriting.
The city name is never translated: "Vice City" reads the same in all eight stores. The country is translated: USA, Etats-Unis, EE. UU., Stati Uniti, Amerika, EUA depending on the language.
A size comparison exists, but it is on no official listing
In late August 2026 the head of development gave an order of magnitude in an interview: the map would be twice the size of the previous game's, Grand Theft Auto V, and three times that of the studio's other major production, Red Dead Redemption 2.
That is not a surface area. No square kilometres have been published, and a size ratio says nothing about how the space is filled: a map twice as large can be twice as dense, or twice as empty.
It is also reported speech, not a publisher release. It is dated and attributed, so it is quotable; it appears on no product listing, which is why it sits here apart from what those listings say.
The "eleven times", and what it actually counts
A second figure circulates alongside the size ratio: eleven times. Two accounts from the same executive, given to two different visitors in late August, do not give it the same meaning.
In the interview with the French magazine received at the studio, it is a count: the number of built-up towns outside the city would be eleven times that of the previous game, in terms of the little towns you come across along the way. That is a tally.
In the other visitor's account, picked up by the trade press, it is an extent: the city with its suburbs would be eleven times larger than the previous game's and its surroundings. A tally and an area do not say the same thing.
Neither is set aside here, because nothing settles it: two reported statements from the same man, days apart, in two languages. The one established fact is that he cited eleven times about what surrounds the city.
Placed roughly where they are in reality
The head of development described how the map is built, in that same interview. The team first decides where to set the game, goes there, drives around, takes pictures. Then it settles which areas to include: the Everglades, towns outside Miami, Miami itself, and what to accentuate about each.
Then comes the sentence that changes how you read a map of this game. The team blocks those elements out roughly in the same geographical locations as they are in the real world, picking out what it wants to highlight. His words: a warped sort of version of reality.
The writers only start afterwards, and he says it in that order: which character set can take the player through the widest range of places, who can take you to the Everglades, who can work through a drug deal in a tower block being raided, who is believable in a glitzy nightclub. He describes them as guides through this world.
The consequence is practical: where a place sits on the map is a clue to the real place it echoes. Our map of Leonida makes that visible, showing on hover the real-world place each location draws on.
One indication of scale, tucked inside a clause
The synopsis gives geography no sentence of its own. It slips one indication into a subordinate clause: the conspiracy stretches "across the state of Leonida".
That is little, and it is all there is. The phrase says the action reaches past the city, without saying how far, or towards what. It establishes that a state surrounds Vice City; it does not describe what that state holds.
The official translations carry the same idea in their own words: "che si estende in tutto lo Stato della Leonida" in Italian, "die sich uber den ganzen Bundesstaat Leonida erstreckt" in German, "que se extiende por todo el estado de Leonida" in Spanish.
One platform page, separate from the product listings, goes slightly further in words. It speaks of the expansive world of Leonida, of the sprawling state of Leonida and of modern-day Vice City. Three adjectives, no figure, and a text written by the console seller rather than by the game's publisher. It is also the only published mention of period: the story is set in the present day.
One divergence is worth noting, because it is real: the Polish listing writes "the sunniest city" where the other seven write "the sunniest place". It is a one-word translation gap, and it changes nothing about the sentence on the state.
What appears on no listing at all
The same listings were read for the words that would describe a map if the publisher had published them. No surface area in square kilometres. No mention of "open world". No city count. No map size. And no other location from the series: no Los Santos, no Liberty City, no San Andreas.
The word "map" itself appears nowhere. On the PlayStation listing, its single occurrence is the "Sitemap" link in the store's own footer.
That absence carries weight because the search works on these documents. On the same pages, at the same moment, "Vice City" appears between thirty-two and fifty-nine times depending on the store, and "Leonida" between eight and twenty-three. These are not the zeroes of a broken measurement.
Put plainly: as things stand, the publisher has named a place and hinted at a scale, and has published no number.
What the previous game's listing does differently
One might assume a store listing always names a game's locations. The previous game's listing, in the same shop, shows otherwise.
Its synopsis describes three characters without naming a single one: "a young street hustler, a retired bank robber, and a terrifying psychopath". It sets the action in "a ruthless city", unnamed as well.
Neither Los Santos, nor Blaine County, nor San Andreas appears on that page, although they are the places of the game it sells.
A listing can therefore describe without naming. That GTA 6's names a city and a state by its second line is not a shop convention: it is a publisher's decision, and that is what makes those two names quotable.
The maps going around, and why they are not here
Detailed maps circulate, some of them careful, often rebuilt frame by frame from the trailers, sometimes drawn from leaks. Some may well be close to the truth. None can be verified today.
The problem is not their quality, it is their status. A reconstructed map carries no publishable source: it cannot be dated, tied to anything the publisher released, or split into what was measured and what was guessed.
The most followed are community mapping projects, versioned and updated release after release, sometimes over several years. The care that goes into them does not make them sources: a redrawn map remains a reading, however patient.
So this page does not reproduce them, and takes no figure from them. The day the publisher releases a map, a surface area or a city count, that release will be cited here with its date and its link, like every other.
Until then, what is established fits into two proper nouns and one subordinate clause. That is little, and it is verifiable in two clicks on two stores.
Frequently asked questions
- How big is the GTA 6 map?
- No surface area has been published. In an interview in late August 2026 the head of development gave a ratio: twice the previous game's map, Grand Theft Auto V, three times that of the studio's other major production, Red Dead Redemption 2. That is reported speech, not an official listing, and a size ratio says nothing about density.
- Is Vice City the only city in the game?
- Nothing says so and nothing denies it. The synopsis names Vice City and adds that the conspiracy stretches across the state of Leonida, which indicates the action reaches past the city. No other city is named.
- Will Los Santos or Liberty City appear?
- Those names appear on no official GTA 6 listing. They do not appear on the previous game's listing either, which names no location at all.
- Is the state spelled Leonida or with an accent?
- Both, depending on the store. Seven of the eight write Leonida without an accent; the Spanish store writes it with an accent on the e, just as it accents Lucia's first name.
- What are the fan-made maps worth?
- They cannot be verified. Some may be accurate, but none can be dated or tied to anything the publisher released, so none is repeated here.
- Can you go inside buildings?
- The studio says you can enter a lot of buildings and that the number is enormous. It has given no figure, no list, no count: that is everything published. The day a number is announced, this page will carry it with its source.
