What does that word mean around the GTA 6 release? This glossary defines the terms of the game and its community in eight languages, using the official translations when they exist.

Code in box

A physical box that contains a download code instead of a disc. The game installs like a digital purchase: without a disc, you need a connection to install it.

Day-one patch

An update released on launch day, downloaded before you play. It fixes what was improved between the end of manufacturing and the launch.

Early access

Playing a few hours or days before the official release, often reserved for a pricier edition. Not to be confused with preloading, which does not let you play.

Gone gold

Said of a game whose final version is finished and sent to manufacturing. Patches can still follow, but the release date becomes very reliable.

Install size

The disk space the game takes once installed, day-one patch included. Check it before release to free up space in time, especially on a nearly full SSD.

Performance mode

A console setting that favors smoothness (frames per second) with slightly reduced image detail. The opposite of quality mode, which favors visuals over smoothness.

Preload

Downloading the game before release while it stays locked. When the unlock time comes, you play right away instead of waiting for a download of many gigabytes.

Quality mode

A console setting that favors image detail (resolution, effects) at the cost of smoothness. Choose it if you prefer beautiful visuals over responsiveness.

Review embargo

The date before which press outlets that received the game may not publish their reviews. The embargo lift, often shortly before release, triggers the review wave.

Unlock time

The exact moment a digitally purchased game becomes playable in your country. It varies by region and storefront, independent of shop opening hours.
