GTA 6: the first-person view

No full first-person mode at launch. That is not the same as "no first person": the view remains available when aiming with certain weapons, and the official demonstration shows it in use.

What was said, and to whom

According to reports published in late August 2026, a video creator received at the Scottish studio asked whether the game would have a first-person mode. The head of development and co-head of the studio answered that the game is built first around the third-person camera, and that development effort went into the animations seen from behind.

It is the same visit, and the same chain, as the frame rate information: a spoken answer, then relayed by the press. Dated and attributed, so quotable, but not a publication by the publisher.

The official product page says nothing on the matter. It lists technical features and classes the game as single-player, without ever mentioning a camera mode.

The first-person view has not gone away

Players will be able to switch to first person when aiming with certain weapons. That is what the sources say, and it is the nuance almost every headline loses.

The official demonstration also shows one of the characters using binoculars in that view. The first-person view is therefore present in the game, at specific moments.

The distinction fits in one sentence: what is missing at launch is the mode, meaning the button that lets you walk the whole city, drive and fight from that viewpoint. Not the view itself.

The studio's precedents, which do not say the same thing

The previous instalment has a full first-person mode covering almost the whole game: walking, driving, combat. But it was not there at launch. It arrived a year later, with the versions released on the following console generation, in 2014.

The studio's other major production, by contrast, shipped with its first-person mode on day one. So the studio knows how to do it at launch, and has done it.

The honest conclusion is that no rule emerges. "This studio always adds first person afterwards" is false, and "it will certainly add it here" is equally so. Nothing has been announced for after launch.

What this is worth, and what it is not

What is solid: a named person, the best placed to know, answered a direct question, and the answer was reported, on known dates, by several concurring sources.

What is not: none of it has been published by the publisher on its own pages. A spoken answer can be clarified, qualified or overtaken by a later decision, and it holds only for the state of the game at the moment it was given.

This page will cite an official announcement with its date the day there is one. Until then, it says what was said, by whom, and in what capacity.

Frequently asked questions

Will GTA 6 have a first-person mode at launch?
No, according to the answer from the studio's co-head, reported in late August 2026. The game is built around the third-person camera, and development effort went into the animations seen from behind.
Will it still be possible to play in first person?
Partly. The first-person view remains available when aiming with certain weapons, and the official demonstration shows a character using binoculars that way. What is missing is the mode that lets you play the whole game like that.
Could that mode arrive later?
Nothing has been announced. The studio's precedents do not settle it: the previous instalment received its own a year after release, but the studio's other major production shipped with one on day one.
Is this an official announcement?
No. It is a spoken answer, given to a creator received at the studio and relayed afterwards. It is dated and attributed, but the publisher has published nothing on the matter on its own pages.
