Carrying a weapon in public in GTA 6

For the first time in the series, long guns cannot be carried out of sight: only two handguns can still be kept concealed. Long guns live in an Ammu-Nation locker or a car boot. And the distinction that matters is not carrying versus not carrying: it is slung versus in your hand.

What actually changed

The co-director of Rockstar North says plainly that this is the first game in the series where weapons cannot be kept concealed. Long guns are no longer treated as invisible.

He set out the scope of the rule to another visitor at the studio: you can always keep two concealed handguns on you. It is the long guns that stay in view.

He describes the decision as one they turned over at length. Pulling a shotgun or a rocket launcher out of nowhere and causing chaos was, in his words, one of the things that made GTA what it was, and they worried that removing it would cost the game its fun.

What decided them was not realism for its own sake. It was that giving the player more choices, and more moments where a decision has to be made, would be worth more than the old freedom.

Carrying is not the same as holding

This is the part every report has flattened. Carrying a single long gun does not turn heads: he says the people around you do not particularly mind, and walking about causes no fuss.

The reaction comes when the gun is in your hand. That is the line, and it is the only one that matters in practice.

Hence the catch with two rifles. You can carry two long guns, but only one fits on your back: the second stays in your hand and cannot be stowed. Two long guns therefore always means one in your hand, and in his words, people are going to react to you if you are rolling around like that.

So the question is not whether you are armed. It is whether you are holding it, right now, where people can see.

Where weapons live now

Long guns are managed through a locker at an Ammu-Nation. There is one in every branch, and that is where you take your own weapons out.

Your personal vehicle also works: you can stow equipment in it and retrieve it later, and the car can be brought to wherever you are, which is how they expect to keep the whole thing from feeling like a chore.

A stolen car's boot works too, and holds what you put there for as long as you keep the car. Dropping a weapon during a job is also a move: it lowers the police's alert level, at the cost of that weapon.

What the street does

Not panic. He is specific about this: simply walking around with a gun out does not cause panic. People dislike it, some move away, some react aggressively toward you. They move away because they have noticed the gun and are wary of it.

The comparison he draws is with the previous game, where people only fled once you aimed at them. In a world built on being believable, he says, walking a street with a carbine in hand and drawing no reaction at all is the unnatural version.

And there is a cost. Walking through town armed carries one, which means doing it should have a purpose. He ties it back to the premise: this is the story of a couple hiding from people who are looking for them, so parading through the city with a weapon out does not add up. It remains possible. The surroundings simply answer.

Where this comes from, and what is not in it

Most of the above comes from one interview, published in Japanese, given after a hands-off demonstration at the studio; the English coverage of early September relays it without naming it. The two details on handguns and on the second long gun come from a creator received at the same studio, who reports his words in a video of 2 September.

That matters here more than usual. Those quotes travelled from English into Japanese and back again, and a sentence that has made that round trip is a paraphrase, not a quotation. This guide is written from the Japanese original and reports it indirectly, which is the honest form for it.

One thing frequently attached to this subject is not in the interview at all: the named tiers of criminal behaviour. The interview describes a tendency, professional or violent, and no ladder of ranks.

Frequently asked questions

Can you still hide a weapon in GTA 6?
Not a long gun: for the first time in the series, rifles and shotguns stay visible. Two handguns, on the other hand, can always be kept concealed, the co-director of Rockstar North told a visitor to the studio.
Does carrying a rifle make everyone panic?
No. Carrying one long gun draws little attention. The reaction comes when the gun is in your hand, and even then it is wariness and people leaving rather than panic.
Can you carry two rifles?
Yes, but only one fits on your back. The second stays in your hand and cannot be stowed, which makes the people around you react.
Where do you keep your weapons?
In a locker at any Ammu-Nation, in your personal vehicle, which can be brought to you, or in the boot of a stolen car for as long as you keep it.
Is this an official announcement?
It comes from two accounts of studio demonstrations, one published in Japanese and one on video in English, both quoting the game's co-director. It is dated and attributed speech, not a page published by the publisher.
