GTA 6: stealing a car, and what the police do with it
Some cars no longer start without a tool. Fuel can run out. And the police no longer know everything: they work from what they observed. The head of development stresses how these systems connect, and the report that relays him lays them out as a chain.
The chain, as the report lays it out
A stolen car may have little fuel. The escape draws the police. Officers remember the vehicle and the outfit. Changing car or clothes helps you get away. The stolen car can be sold on. The money can then help move the story itself forward.
What he puts forward is the integration, rather than each piece taken alone: in his words, the team has put so many layers of systems into the game for the player to interact with that he believes it will make it more fun. Almost every write-up pulled a single link out to make a headline, which loses exactly what makes it interesting.
He recounts an episode from his own playthrough: fleeing the police, he steals a car with less than a quarter of a tank and runs dry before losing them. That, he says, is how situations nobody wrote come about.
Not every car opens the same way
Depending on the vehicle, a tool is needed: a thin metal strip slid between window and door to work the lock, or a key cloner. Those tools unlock as you progress.
Freedom remains wide all the same: he notes that if he comes across a supercar in a street, he can take it at any point in the game. It is not a lock, it is a difference between vehicles.
Cars and bikes consume fuel, which really can run out, and electric vehicles have charging points. The stated intention is not to make it a chore: in his words, the team is trying to make it so that it is not annoying.
The police work from what they saw
Rather than officers who appear to know everything about the player, the described system rests on what was observed. Clothing, appearance, vehicle and weapons can form part of the suspect description.
That is what makes changing clothes or car useful during an escape. The personal vehicle's boot serves as storage for weapons and equipment, and clothes can be kept there too, which matters when changing your look helps you avoid recognition.
The player can no longer carry a limitless arsenal: two short weapons and two long ones, with the larger ones visible on the body. In his phrase, you no longer pull a rocket launcher out of nowhere.
What getting caught actually costs
Money is no longer a single counter. The studio describes two separate pockets: a bank account, and the cash you carry.
The difference shows when things go wrong. On death, the head of development says so plainly: cash that has not been deposited disappears, and in his demonstration he then goes looking for a cash machine. On arrest, according to a second report, the player loses all the money they are carrying. What sits in the bank does not move; what you carry can be lost.
Cash you carry is therefore lost in full, not in part, and both reports point to cash machines as the way to put it in the bank. Nothing is published about the amounts involved. What is established fits in one sentence: bank money is safe, carried money is not.
One more step does not come from the studio but from a creator who played there, in a video published on 29 August 2026. After escaping the police with a large bag of cash, he found the notes were marked: they had to be laundered first, and they went straight to a shop that launders money. Neither how it works nor what it costs is described.
What the game remembers about how you commit a crime
A system tracks the player's criminal behaviour. Wounding someone in the leg or arm puts them down without return fire; finishing off someone already out of the fight does not carry the same weight.
According to a September report, each of the two characters has their own profile of that kind: the way one is played is not the way the other is, and the two can diverge.
These details come from sessions shown to guests received at the studio, then reported. They are dated, attributed spoken words, not pages published by the publisher. The performance guide explains why that distinction matters.
Frequently asked questions
- Can you still steal any car in GTA 6?
- Yes, but not the same way for every vehicle. Some need a tool, a thin metal strip or a key cloner, which unlock as you progress. The head of development notes that a supercar spotted in a street can still be taken at any point in the game.
- Is there fuel in GTA 6?
- Cars and bikes have fuel, which can run out, and electric vehicles have charging points. The team says it is trying to keep this from becoming a constant obligation.
- How do the police work?
- They work from what they observed rather than from perfect knowledge of the player. Clothing, appearance, vehicle and weapons can form part of the suspect description, which makes changing car or clothes useful during an escape.
- How many weapons can you carry?
- Two short weapons and two long ones, with the larger ones visible on the body. The personal vehicle's boot serves as storage for the rest of the equipment and for clothes.
- Do you lose your money when you get killed or arrested?
- The cash you are carrying, yes, all of it, if it has not been deposited. The head of development says so for death, and a second report says the same for arrest. Money held in the bank account is not affected, and cash machines are how you put it there. Nothing is published about amounts.
- Do you have to launder stolen money?
- Marked money, yes, according to a creator who played at the studio: after escaping the police with a bag of cash, the notes were marked and had to be laundered first, at a shop that does it. Nothing is published about how it works or what it costs.
