GTA 6: microtransactions and artificial intelligence

Two questions asked directly by two hosts received at the studio's headquarters, in a visit reported in late August 2026: will players be able to spend real money in the game, and was generative AI used to build it? Both answers were no. They cover the single-player game only.

The two answers, and who gave them

Two hosts of an American show were received at the studio's Scottish headquarters in Edinburgh to see the game before its public showing, in a visit reported in late August 2026. The frame rate information came from another visit, by another creator, reported a few days earlier.

The first asked whether players would be able to spend real-world money in the game. The reported answer is that there is no monetisation. The second asked about generative AI without hedging. The reported answer was just as flat: there is none in the game.

The person answering is the head of development and co-head of the studio. He is the best placed person to know, and his name is public. That does not turn his answers into a publication, but it makes them quotable, datable and attributable.

What these answers do not cover

They concern the single-player game of 19 November. Not the online mode that will follow. Asked about that, the studio refused to say anything at all.

That silence matters, because online is exactly where the series' monetisation has always lived. Real-money currency packs have been sold there for more than a decade in the previous instalment. A promise about single-player therefore says nothing about what will happen online, and many headlines suggest otherwise.

The shortcut to avoid is easy to state: "no microtransactions in GTA 6" and "no microtransactions in GTA 6's online mode" are two different sentences, and only one of them was said.

"No generative AI" is not "no AI"

A game this size relies on systems that constantly decide traffic, pedestrian behaviour, police reactions, which animation to play. Those systems have been in the series for years and nobody is questioning them.

The line drawn by the answer is about generative tools: those that produce a voice, an image or a text in place of a person. That precise category is what is declared absent.

The distinction is not a matter of vocabulary. It separates a production technique, which the studio speaks about, from a simulation technique, which has always been there and which nobody said was going away.

What corroborates, and what remains spoken word

The parent company's chairman had already said, in February 2026, that generative AI has no part in what the studio builds, and that its worlds are constructed street by street rather than generated. Two separate statements, seven months apart, pointing the same way.

An American daily also reported an animation count above six hundred thousand, against roughly fifty-five thousand in the previous instalment and around three hundred thousand in the studio's other major production. That figure comes from the press, not the publisher: it is a reported order of magnitude, not published data.

What remains is the nature of all this: none of these answers was published on a page belonging to the publisher. They are spoken words, dated and attributed, reported by those who heard them. Better than a rumour, and not a product page.

Frequently asked questions

Will GTA 6 have microtransactions?
In the single-player game of 19 November, the answer from the studio's co-head, reported in late August 2026, is no: no monetisation, no real-money purchases. That answer does not cover the online mode, which the studio refused to discuss.
What about the online mode?
Nothing has been said. The question was raised and the studio did not answer it. In the previous instalment, real-money currency packs have been sold for more than a decade, and that is where the series' monetisation has always lived.
Was GTA 6 built using artificial intelligence?
The answer concerns generative AI, the kind that produces voices, images or text in place of a person: it is declared absent. The systems handling traffic, pedestrians or police belong to a different technique, present in the series for years, and were not called into question.
Are these answers official?
They are attributed and dated, but they are not publications. They were given verbally to two people received at the studio's headquarters, then reported by them. The publisher has published nothing on either point on its own pages.
