GTA 6: cancelling a pre-order, and until when

Yes, a digital pre-order can be cancelled, and the window is wider than most people think. But it does not close on release day: it closes at the first byte downloaded. Preloading counts, and it can start by itself.

The storefront rule, word for word

On the PlayStation Store, a pre-order placed more than fourteen days before release can be cancelled at any time up to the release date, on one condition: not having started to download the main part of the content.

A pre-order placed fourteen days or less before release can be cancelled within fourteen days of the purchase, under the same condition.

And the sentence that decides everything: if downloading of the main part has started, no refund is possible. The storefront states that preloading counts as that download.

What nobody says about preloading

Preloading opens before release precisely so the game is ready at midnight. It is convenient, and it is also the exact moment the right to cancel ends.

Worse: the storefront notes that downloads start automatically when the corresponding console option is enabled. A pre-order can therefore become final without you touching anything, while the console sits in rest mode.

If you are still hesitating, the practical consequence fits in one line: decide before preloading opens, or turn off automatic downloads while you make up your mind.

What EU law adds

In the EU, a distance purchase opens a fourteen-day right of withdrawal, with no justification required. For digital content, that right is lost once performance has begun and the buyer has expressly agreed to lose it.

As long as nothing has been downloaded, performance has not begun. That is exactly why the cancellation window on a pre-order is so wide: there is nothing to perform yet.

These rules are European. Outside the EU, only the storefront's own terms apply, and they vary from country to country.

Physical editions are different

A physical pre-order follows another rule: it can be cancelled until the order enters the shipping process, which happens a few days before release.

The date that matters is therefore not release day but the shipping date, and it comes earlier.

The procedure varies by retailer. Loreside only relays what the publisher's own storefront publishes; for any other shop, its own terms govern.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel after preloading?
No. The storefront is explicit: once downloading of the main part has started, no refund is possible. Preloading is that download.
Can preloading start without me launching it?
Yes, if automatic downloads are enabled on the console. It is the one way to lose your right to cancel without doing anything.
How long do I have to cancel?
Until release day if the pre-order was placed more than fourteen days before it, otherwise fourteen days after the purchase. In both cases, provided nothing has been downloaded.
What if the release is delayed again?
The pre-order stands, and the cancellation window follows the new date. The storefront's terms apply, not a decision by the publisher.
