What is in the box

The publisher states it plainly: the physical version contains a download code, and no disc is included in the box. The code downloads the game, exactly like a digital purchase.

It is expected in stores and shipping from 12 November, a week before release. The reason is explicit: to allow preloading, which opens that same 12 November at local midnight.

There is no physical Ultimate Edition. A buyer of the Standard box can purchase the Ultimate upgrade from their platform store, once their code has been used.

The consequence nobody connects

A digital pre-order can be cancelled as long as downloading has not started, and preloading counts as that download. It is written on the storefront's own help page.

But the box arrives precisely so it can be activated from 12 November. Redeeming your code that day therefore ends your right to cancel, seven days before you could even launch the game.

Both facts are public and neither is hidden. It is their meeting that appears nowhere, and it is the meeting that costs something.

What it changes for resale and lending

A download code is used once. Once redeemed on an account, it holds no value for anyone else, which was not true of a disc.

The publisher says nothing about resale: there is nothing to say, since a redeemed code simply stops existing as a transferable object. That is a property of the medium, not a decision.

An unopened box, on the other hand, stays transferable as long as the code is unused. That is the only window where the word physical keeps its usual meaning.

The box's one real advantage

The code can be redeemed as soon as it arrives, which allows preloading on 12 November just like a digital pre-order. On that point the two are equal.

So the box mainly brings an object, and a way to pay in a shop. What it does not bring is what the word leads you to expect: a self-contained copy of the game.
