What the publisher discloses about GTA 6's cost
No official development cost has ever been published for GTA 6 alone. Take-Two files its development spending as one company-wide line covering every studio, never broken out by title, which is why the figures circulating online never cite a primary source.
What is actually filed
Take-Two is a listed company and files quarterly reports with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Those filings carry a line called Software development costs and licenses.
It appears in three places: on the balance sheet, split between a current and a non-current portion; in the cash-flow statement as amortisation; and again as the period's change. All three are company totals, covering every studio and every game in development.
No title is broken out. Not GTA 6, not any other. That is a reporting choice, not an omission, and it is the same across the industry.
Why the figures you have seen have no source
A number attributed to one game cannot come from the filings, because the filings do not contain per-game numbers. It comes from an estimate, a reconstruction, or someone repeating another article.
That does not automatically make it wrong. It makes it unverifiable, which is a different thing, and worth knowing before repeating it.
The tell is simple: an article giving a precise cost for one game and citing no primary document has none to cite.
What can be said honestly
That the company's development spending is disclosed as a whole, and that it has grown over the years the game has been in production.
That the game has been announced, delayed twice and dated, all of which the filings and the publisher's own posts record.
And that anyone claiming to know what this one game cost is going beyond what the publisher has published.
How long the game has been in development
The studio said so itself, to Trois Couleurs, in August 2026: the game has been in development since 2015, and the idea had been gestating for a long time.
The same interview immediately adds the qualifier that matters: most of the team only really started working on it after Red Dead Redemption II shipped, in 2018. Eleven years separate 2015 from the release, but not eleven years at full staffing.
That is exactly why a duration does not convert into a budget. Multiplying years by an assumed headcount yields a figure that looks precise and rests on nothing: neither the headcount, nor how it grew, nor the salaries are published.
How to read the filing yourself
Open the SEC's EDGAR database and search for Take-Two Interactive, then open the most recent quarterly report.
Use your browser's find function on the phrase software development costs. You will see the balance-sheet line and the cash-flow line, both as company totals.
It is free, it takes a couple of minutes, and it is the same document every serious analysis works from.
