Changing your region to play GTA 6 earlier
The game unlocks at local midnight, so New Zealand starts 19 hours before the last market. What decides your hour is the storefront your account belongs to. Changing that is impossible on PlayStation and constrained on Xbox.
Why the gap is real
Every national storefront that publishes an hour publishes the same one: midnight, local time. Converted to universal time, those midnights land at different instants, which spreads the release across most of a day.
At the two ends: New Zealand unlocks at 11:00 UTC on 18 November, the last market at 06:00 UTC on 19 November. Nineteen hours separate them, and the whole world sits somewhere in between.
So the question is not silly. Nineteen hours is a real head start, and it is also the window in which clips, endings and surprises start circulating before most of the planet has launched the game.
What actually decides your hour
Not your physical location, and not the region your console is set to. The hour that applies to you is the one published by the storefront your account belongs to.
That is the same rule that governs download codes: what counts is the region attached to the account, not the country you happen to be buying from.
Which turns the whole question into a single one. Playing at New Zealand's hour means holding an account registered in New Zealand. Everything below follows from that.
On PlayStation, the region cannot be changed
PlayStation answers it in one line on its own support page: you cannot change your account's country or region after the account has been created. There is no procedure, no exception listed, no form.
A New Zealand storefront therefore means a second, separate account. And a separate account is exactly that: the game bought on one is not on the other, so it would have to be bought again.
Which is where the arithmetic stops being about time. Nineteen hours would cost you the price of the game a second time, plus a copy of your progress that does not exist.
On Xbox it is possible, but not for this
Xbox does let you change the country or region of a Microsoft account, and it says plainly what the procedure is for: moving. Its support page states that these steps are only for when you are moving and need to update your location, and adds that a temporary stay elsewhere is not a reason to change anything.
The change can also be refused outright. The page lists the cases: billing suspended, incomplete or incorrect billing details, a balance due on the account, or a move that would change whether you count as a minor.
And one thing does not follow you. The money in your Microsoft account stays behind, in as many words: funds cannot be transferred between regions. Anything left in the wallet has to be spent before the change, or it is lost.
What works without changing anything
Spoilers travel at their own speed either way. Nineteen hours ahead of you, people are playing, and the clips reach every feed long before your own midnight. That is worth planning for whatever your region.
The one thing worth checking is your own hour, on your own storefront, in the week before release. The product page carries a timestamped release date, and it is the only figure that applies to you.
And if you are genuinely moving abroad, the Xbox procedure is there for that. Read what does not follow you before you start, not after.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I change my PlayStation account region to play earlier?
- No. PlayStation states on its own support page that an account's country or region cannot be changed after the account has been created.
- Would a second New Zealand account work?
- It would carry New Zealand's hour, but it is a separate account: the game you already own is attached to the first one, so you would be buying it a second time.
- And on Xbox?
- The change exists, but Xbox frames it for people who are actually moving. It can be refused for billing reasons, and the money in your account does not move with you.
- How much earlier does New Zealand actually get it?
- Nineteen hours before the last market: 11:00 UTC on 18 November against 06:00 UTC on 19 November, both being local midnight.
