GTA 6: midnight where you live, or 05:00 UTC?

All thirty national storefronts we checked publish the same thing: midnight, local time. The 05:00 UTC figure you often read is accurate, but for one country only.

What the thirty storefronts publish

Every national PlayStation Store shows a timestamped release date on its own product page. Checked one by one, the thirty storefronts that have one all publish the same local time: midnight.

Converted to universal time, those thirty entries produce ten different values, from 00:00 to 23:00. That is the mechanical consequence of a local unlock: midnight arrives at different instants depending on the time zone.

This double reading explains everything else. The same launch can be described as « midnight everywhere » or as « ten different times », depending on whether you read local or universal time.

Where the 05:00 UTC figure comes from

Midnight in New York, in November, is exactly 05:00 universal time. The figure is therefore correct for the United States and Canada, and correct for them alone.

Open a single product page, the American one, convert its time to universal time, and you get 05:00 UTC. Reading a worldwide time into that means generalising one country to the planet.

The check takes seconds: the British page publishes midnight, which is 00:00 UTC, and the German page publishes midnight too, which is 23:00 UTC the previous day. Three pages are enough to rule out a single global time.

The three countries with no national storefront

Hungary, Israel and Romania have no separate PlayStation storefront: their product page redirects to the United States one. No local time is published there.

For a player living there, the time that counts is that of the storefront the account belongs to. That is the only rule that holds, and it also applies to anyone travelling or whose console is set to another region.

What the publisher has not published

The publisher has announced no unlock time at all. Everything above comes from the storefronts, which timestamp their pages, and not from an announcement.

The distinction matters: a storefront can change its timestamp without notice, whereas a publisher that announces commits. Absent an announcement, your own storefront page remains the reference, and it is worth reopening in the week before release.

Xbox, for its part, publishes no per-country unlock time on its public pages. It will appear here the day it is published.

Frequently asked questions

Does GTA 6 unlock at the same second everywhere?
Not according to what the storefronts publish. The thirty national pages checked show local midnight, which spreads the launch across more than twenty hours between the first and last region.
So is the 05:00 UTC figure wrong?
It is accurate for the United States and Canada, where midnight is 05:00 universal time. It becomes wrong the moment it is applied to another country.
How do I check the time that applies to me?
Open the GTA 6 product page on your own country's storefront: the release date is timestamped there. That value is what counts, not a conversion made from another region.
