What the rating board has, and has not

Searching the ESRB database for Grand Theft Auto VI returns no entry for the game. The same search for the previous game returns it immediately, so the database works and the absence means something: this title has not been classified.

That is normal at this stage. A rating is assigned close to release, once the board has reviewed the finished content, and it applies to a specific region. Europe has its own system, and it works to its own calendar.

So the honest answer to a parent asking today is that no board has ruled, and anyone quoting a definitive age is going beyond what exists.

What the publisher says in the meantime

Rockstar's own page carries a plain sentence: the game may contain content inappropriate for children, and readers are pointed to the rating board for the eventual rating.

That is a warning, not a rating. It tells you the direction without giving the label, and it comes from the party that knows the content.

Given the series it belongs to, that sentence is worth taking at face value.

Four boards, four labels, all provisional

The eight national store pages were read on the same day. Each shows the board of its own region, and none shows a final rating.

The US store reads "ESRB Rating Pending Mature 17+", with the descriptor "May contain content inappropriate for children". The French, Spanish, Italian, Polish and Turkish stores read "PEGI Provisional 18". The German one reads "USK Rating Pending". The Brazilian one reads "ClassInd Rating Pending".

Two words come back everywhere: pending and provisional. It is the store itself saying nothing has been settled, in each region's own language.

A French reader therefore sees an 18 where an American reader sees a 17+, and a German reader sees no figure at all. All three are reading the same thing: the rating has not been issued yet, and the figure shown is the board's own estimate while it waits.

How to check when the rating lands

Search the rating board for your region by the game's name. If an entry exists, it carries the age category and the content descriptors that explain it.

The store listing will follow, usually within days of the board publishing.

Until an entry exists, treat any specific age you read online as someone's guess.
